Guidelines for 2019 Competition Applicants

All musical instruments (including vocal) and formats (solo, ensemble, piano four-hands, 2 pianos, chorus, etc.) of western classical music are eligible.

Application deadline: October 15, 2019 for Thai Contestants
[EXTENDED!] September 25 October 15, 2019 for International Contestants

Applicants are divided, judged, and awarded in the following age categories.

  • Junior Category “A” : 9 years old or younger as of January 1, 2019.
  • Junior Category “B” : From 10 to 12 years old as of January 1, 2019.
  • Junior Category “C” : From 13 to 15 years old as of January 1, 2019
  • Open Category: 16 years old or older
    Contestant must be at least 16 years old as of January 1, 2019.

NOTE

  • Applying for the competition with an ensemble performance, the category is determined according to the age of the oldest performer in the group.
  • Upgrade from Category C to the Open Category only when approved by the judges.
  • Junior Contestants will only be judged to the Semi-Final round. They will not proceed to the Final Round.

 

Preliminary Audition

Entry Fee : 2,000THB

 

  • Contestants will perform one program/repertory of their choice for 10 minutes (maximum).
  • It is recommended to perform without music notes if you are a solo performer.
  • Contestants in the Juniors Category can play shorter programs. Their performances are not judged based on time.
  • All the contestants will receive feedback from our judge member.
  • 2016, 2017 and 2018 Award Winners will be exempt from the Preliminary Audition only if they are in the same category. Entry fees apply.

 

–Regional Round In Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai Residents ONLY
Contestants who stay in Chiang Mai before/on January 1st, 2019 is eligible to the Chiangmai Prizes. Any nationality is acceptable.

–Youtube Video Round for All Nationalities

We accept Youtube video submissions for all the contestants except Chiang Mai residents. We will no longer hold a round in Bangkok.

  • Your face, hands and pedal position (for piano) must be clearly visible throughout the recording.
  • The recording must have been made during 2019.
  • Before the contestant plays their piece, begin by introducing your name, entry number, the title of the music you are performing in English.
  • Contestants will perform one program / repertory of their choice for 10 minutes (maximum) and upload it on Youtube.
  • Contestants in the Juniors Category can play shorter program.
  • Video has to be uploaded to Youtube and be emailed the URL to us by September 25 for international contestants (Or October 15 for the late entry participants), October 15 for Thai contestants.
  • We will announce the names of the international qualifiers on our website on September 30, 2019

First Round

Date: November 17 to 19, 2019
Fee: 2,000THB
Venue: Baan Roichan Hall (Louts Hotel Pang Suan Kaew 7F)

 

  • Contestants will perform one program / repertory of their choice that is a maximum of 10 minutes per contestant.

  • All the contestants will receive a certificate.

Nov 17(Sun), 2019 Chiang Mai Contestants Only

  • This round does not include other northern Thailand contestants.
  • We will give the Chiang Mai Prize on this day.
  • Only this round, Chiang Mai residence competitors can perform the same piece with the Preliminary Audition.
  • The Chiang Mai Prize winners ( including some honorable mentions ) proceed to the Semi-Final.
  • Some International Judges will not be in attendance to join for this day.

 

Semi-Final Round

Junior contestants will only be judged to the Semi-Final round. They will not proceed to the Final Round.

 

Date: November 20 (Wed) and 21 (Thur), 2019
Fee: 2,000THB
Venue: Baan Roichan Hall (Louts Hotel Pang Suan Kaew 7F)

 

  • Contestants will perform one or two program(s) / repertorie(s) of their choice that is a maximum of 15 minutes per contestant.
  • Contestants in the Juniors Category can play shorter program(s). Their performances are not judged based on time.
  • Your programs must be different from the piece performed at the First Round.
  • It is recommended to perform without music notes if you are a solo performer.
  • The Chiang Mai Prize winners who proceed to the Semi-Final Round should perform one more piece total in 15 min. (They can incude the same programs they performed in the previous rounds.)
  • All the Semi-Finalists will receive a certificate.
  • It will be open to the public.(Free Admission)

 

Final Round

Date: November 22, 2019
Fee: Free
Venue: Baan Roichan Hall (Louts Hotel Pang Suan Kaew 7F)

 

  • The final round will be a 20 minutes concert style performance.
  • Your programs must be different from the pieces performed at the Semi-Final Round.
  • It is recommended to perform without music notes if you are a solo performer.
  • All the Finalists will receive a certificate.
  • It will be open to the public.(Free Admission)
  • Finalists are judged by all the judge members.

 

NOTE

  • The payment will not be refunded in case of non-participation.
  • A piano accompanist has to be brought by the contestant. It is also possible to request a piano accompanist designated by the festival.
  • Competition performances will be opened to the public.

Prizes and Awards

Junior Category
  • Contestants will only be judged to the Semi-Final round. They will not proceed to the Final Round.
  • The Gold Prize(1st Prize), Silver Prize(2nd Prize), Bronze Prize(3rd Prize), and Encouragement Prize will be awarded.
  • Winners will be eligible to perform at the winners’ concert, but no cash prize will be awarded for this category.
  • 2019 Award Winners will be exempt from the Preliminary Audition in 2020 only if they are in the same category.
Open Category

The Gold Prize(1st Prize), Silver Prize,(2nd Prize) Bronze Prize(3rd Prize), and Encouragement Prize will be awarded.

  • Gold Award (1st Prize) H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Trophy: 100,000THB
  • Silver Award (2nd Prize) Governor of Chiangmai Trophy: 50,000THB
  • Bronze Award (3rd Prize) Chiangmai Youth Philharmonic Band and Symphony Orchestra Foundation Trophy: 30,000THB

Winners will also be given the opportunity to perform at Winners Concert in 2020.

 

Ginastera Special Prize

Contestants who perform the music of Ginastera during the competition will be judged for the “Ginastera Special Prize.”

  • Open Category: 10,000B
  • Junior Category: No cash prize
Special Award for Outstanding Thai Musician

The prize is limited to one Thai national contestant.

  • Open Category: One round trip air ticket from Bangkok to Japan
  • Junior Category: No prize

 

Special Awards for Chiang Mai Musician

The prizes are limited to contestants currently residing in Chiang Mai as of January 1, 2019,regardless of nationality.
Junior Category: No cash prize

  • Gold (1st Prize) : 20,000THB
  • Silver(2nd Prize): 10,000THB
  • Bronze(3rd Prize): 5,000THB

 

Usaato Special Award

Several Special Recognition Awards will be presented by Mr. Usaburo Sato.

  • Open Category: 5,000B
  • Junior Category: No cash prize

 

 

Awards Ceremony

  • Junior Category: After the semi-final on Nov 21, 2019
  • Open Category: During the Gala Concert on Nov 23, 2019

Where to stay in Chiang Mai

The Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel and Baan Dinki are the most convenient hotels for contestants. Please read our HOTEL PAGE if you would like to stay in these hotels with special rate.
Baan Roichan Hall (Competition venue) is located by the swimming pool on the 7th floor of The Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel, it is also connected to Baan Dinki Hotel. Both hotels are sitting adjacent to the Kad Theater which is inside the Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Complex. It is just a walking distance from Nimmanhaemin Rd and the Old City, surrounded by Chiang Mai’s best selection of restaurants, attraction and entertainment facilities.
